THE illegal blockade of Cuba has begun to cripple Cuba's economy further, following imperialist actions by the United States to illegally overthrow the Venezuelan people's government, and moves by the Trump regime to pressure neighbours with tariffs if they continue to trade with Cuba.
These moves by the US regime have resulted in drastically lower oil imports into Cuba, which would pressure Cuba to abandon the democratic, worker-centred system that they have held since the Revolution in 1959. The Cuban government has repeatedly condemned the blockade, and has been joined every year since 1992 in the United Nations by almost every member - with the exception of the US regime itself, and the so-called 'State' of Israel.
If Cuba were to return to a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, the gains of the Revolution since 1959 - free and accessible healthcare for all, worker control of industry, an extremely low cost of living, inexpensive public transport, and some of the best legislation on LGBTQIA+ people in the world - would be lost. Cuba would return, most likely, to a state controlled from Washington, with a government of Florida's richest men taking on basic duties from Havana.
It is extremely telling that, despite Cuba being forced to essentially function as a self-sufficient island, despite its lack of resources, socialism has ensured that Cubans have a good life, far better and far easier than in some capitalist backwater states that have received all the aid they could ever hope for from the imperialist powers. It is extremely telling that, for Cuba and the socialist system to even get vaguely close to its potential end, every entry to the island must be shut off, and the island must be entirely isolated from the outside world. The situation in Cuba is proof that the phrase 'socialism has never worked' could not be more wrong - could those that say that provide an example of a capitalist state surviving, and thriving, under the conditions forced upon Cuba since the beginning of the blockade?
Despite the ongoing crisis forced upon Cuba by the United States regime, it seems that the people of Cuba will once again triumph, and emerge from this difficult period retaining control of their future.
