Lawyers representing Grill'd workers allege that workers were not given their required rest breaks
FAST food chain Grill'd has joined the likes of McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken, and is now facing a class action lawsuit from its workers over failure to provide rest breaks that Grill'd workers are required to take.
Unlike in previous similar class actions against KFC and McDonald's, which were backed by Shine Lawyers and the Retail and Fast Food Workers' Union (RAFFWU), the class action against Grill'd has been backed by Victorian legal firm Gordon Legal, and has been backed by the yellow 'Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association' or SDA.
SDA is a right-wing union that has been entirely controlled by the Christian far-right and company interests in retail and fast food, however it is known to initiate actions when companies harm their ability to have access to the largely young workforce in these industries.
The legitimate Union representing workers at Grill'd is the United Workers' Union, which led Grill'd workers on the first fast food strike in national history in June 2025.
This most recent action by the SDA can be seen as a response to the increasing influence of the member-driven RAFFWU in industries long dominated by the SDA, and shows that change can be made outside of the yellow unions like the SDA.
