AMERICAN card company Mastercard is set to enter Syria, following the signing of a partnership between the company and Qatar National Bank (QNB).
Mastercard had previously been unusable in Syria, under the Assad-led government before its overthrow in 2024, however following the formation of the pro-Western al-Sharaa government in January 2025, American corporations were invited to move in and begin plundering.
Syrians that use Mastercard will face the same issues surrounding fees as any other person forced to use Mastercard cards elsewhere in the world.
Syrians' money will also be drained significantly as a result of this new venture to the United States, which stands to profit greatly from Syria now that it is under a more sympathetic regime.
Syria remains extremely unstable despite the fall of Assad, with infighting widespread between the US-backed factions, including the new government, the 'Syrian Democratic Forces' - a Kurdish pseudo-left organisation that controls much of the North and East for US interests - and the 'Syrian Free Army' - an organisation formed by the United States to aid in the guarding of the al-Tanf Military Base, established by the United States on Syrian territory in 2016 without the permission of relevant Syrian authorities.
