The new Mayor has promised to govern 'as a Democratic Socialist'
DEMOCRAT Zohran Mamdani was officially inaugurated as New York City's 112th Mayor on 1 January, 2026.
The Mayor, who was elected on a so-called 'Democratic Socialist' platform, has called his inauguration the start of 'a new era' for the United States' largest city.
Proving the dismal situation for the American left, Mamdani, whose policies are extremely moderate even by the standards of the rest of the global West, insisted that he will not 'abandon [his] principles for fear of being deemed radical.' That Mamdani's moderate policies, including free buses and the establishment of city-owned grocery stores, is seen as 'radical' by such a large proportion of the US's population, is a stain on the efforts of the left in that country.
Despite the lack of change promised by the new government, unfortunately this seems to be the most promising new leader in the United States, sitting to the left of all other 'mainstream' political figures, and as a result its inauguration should be celebrated critically.
