A poll released yesterday by Hinterlaces has shown that the most prominent 'opposition' leader in Venezuela, María Corina Machado, is now one of the most deeply distrusted and disliked figures in Venezuela, with less than 9% holding a favourable or even neutral opinion of her.
This is despite the fact that very recently, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her activism.
The shocking numbers in the Hinterlaces poll has been corroborated by a DataViva poll, which found that 89% of respondents considered her actions 'negative'.
The United States government has lifted Machado up for over twenty years as a 'freedom fighter' with the ideals of the Venezuelan people at heart. These polls, as well as the mass mobilisation of the Venezuelan people against United States imperialism, has shown that this is not true in any sense of the word.
Her unpopularity in Venezuela is absolutely not without merit, as recently Machado has been beating the drums of war, advocating for the privatisation of Venezuelan infrastructure, and calling for regime change. This is happening as the United States prepares for a war against the 'dictator' Nicolás Maduro, who won the election and the support of the people.
As was shown in 2015 by the election of an opposition-led National Assembly, there is still liberal 'democracy' in Venezuela, and, if they get the votes of a majority of people in Venezuela, the opposition could form government. This shows that the United States does not care in the modern day about the 'democratic will of the people' as they so like to claim.
