FORMER Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has announced today that he will resign as Ambassador to the United States a year ahead of the end of his term, in order to take a position at the Asia Society, a US-based think tank.
Rudd has served since March 2023 in the Ambassador position, and in that time has worked to cement the AUKUS deal, which consists of giving the United States and United Kingdom billions and billions of dollars for those nations to consider potentially giving Australia nuclear submarines - which will almost certainly be outdated - at some point in the future.
Despite his pro-US stance, he has attracted controversy with the United States since the 2024 transfer of power from the Biden-led regime to the Trump-led regime. Rudd had previously decried Trump as a 'traitor to the west' and 'the most destructive President in history', and was forced to backtrack on these statements when his job and salary depended on it.
Despite the at times cosmetic tension between Rudd and Trump, Rudd was instrumental in continuing the alignment of Australia with the United States, being crucial for several deals to entrench US control over the minerals sector and shut China out.
Rudd was extremely successful in giving up all that he previously stood for when becoming Ambassador, abandoning his China-focused foreign policy positions, blowing up the progress that he had previously made in that regard.
Rudd was also successful, however, in achieving some positive gains, such as the release of Julian Assange in 2024.
He now takes the role as Global President of the Asia Society, and head of its Centre for China Analysis, a New York-based think tank that advocates for so-called 'freedom' in Asia, aiming to do so from what it calls a 'non-partisan' perspective.
It is currently unknown who will succeed Rudd as Ambassador to the United States at this time, and the government has stated that his replacement will be found and announced in 'due course'
