FORMER Deputy Prime Minister and National Party leader Barnaby Joyce has today announced that he is joining Pauline Hanson's One Nation, the far-right party that has been surging ahead in the polls in recent weeks and months.
Following the 2025 election, in which the Liberal and National Parties saw their worst election defeat since before World War 2, Joyce was not given a Shadow Ministry, in an attempt by the new Party leadership to move towards the political centre. Joyce, who has sat on the right of the Liberal/National Party, immediately moved to undermine his party, leading to speculation in the media of his eventual defection to a right-wing party.
In late November, he finally left the National Party, becoming an independent MP. Notably, his time as an independent contradicted his first campaign to enter the House, during which he relentlessly campaigned against first Tony Windsor, the popular independent MP for the seat of New England, and later Rob Taber, another independent.
Speculation grew after his resignation from the National Party, of the potential that he would go on to join One Nation. A dinner with Pauline Hanson would later seal the deal for Joyce, who, today, made the decision to finally join the far-right party, giving it its third House of Representatives MP in its history.
While Joyce is not expected to recontest his House of Representatives seat at the next election, it is expected that he will soon be joined by other conservative Liberals and Nationals in One Nation.
